How Reflexology Benefits Seniors

Human connection through touch is good for mental and emotional well-being. As many people age, they find themselves isolated and lonely because spouses and friends have died, and/or loved ones live far away. Or, perhaps an illness or lack of mobility restricts their ability to leave the house or care facility. These issues can lead to depression and increased anxieties which have an impact on overall health. Through reflexology, these feelings and physical issues can be addressed.

Reflexology is a touch modality that is gentle and relaxing, and is also complementary to other therapies and medical treatments. It works by stimulating the reflexes that correspond to every organ, gland, and system in the body that are located in the feet, hands, and ears. Reflexology for seniors is especially beneficial for the following reasons:

  • Reduces anxiety and depression

  • Helps with stroke recovery

  • Reduces high blood pressure

  • Improves circulation (blood flow to brain and all parts of body)

  • Improves foot mobility (good for balance and stability)

  • Normalizes body functions (e.g. elimination)

  • Can aid detoxification

  • Offers a non-invasive, safe, and comforting form of touch

In addition, during a reflexology session, no clothing is removed, and there is no need for repositioning. Reflexology can be performed with the client in bed, in a chair, on a couch, or in a wheelchair, making it convenient and easy for the client to receive either foot or hand reflexology from where they are.

Adding reflexology to elder care promotes a better quality of life through the human connection of touch. It’s safe, gentle, and effective making it a good complement to health care.
